- Travelers should know that there have been previous cases of kidnappings of U.S. citizens or travelers. Five cases were recorded in 2013, one in 2014 and one in 2015. There has been no specific target such as race, gender or age, but there have been kidnappings.
- During holidays, especially Christmas and Carnival, there is an increase in criminal activity since there are more large gatherings.
- The Chikungunya virus has been found in Haiti, and is transmitted through mosquitoes, so be cautious when outside. Also, be careful with the water supply since there is no central filtration system for waterways in Haiti.
- Embassy employees are not allowed to go to certain parts of Haiti due to high criminal activity. These areas are: Cite Soleil, La Saline, Croix-des-Bouquets, Carrefour, Martissant, the port road (Boulevard La Saline), urban route Nationale #1, route Nationale #9, the airport road (Boulevard Toussaint L'Ouverture) and Road via Route Nationale #1. Travelers are encouraged to stay out of these areas, since multiple murders, robberies, and other dangerous activity have been reported.
- Do not carry items for others to or from Haiti, since there have been cases where illegal drug traffickers have made unaware travelers transporters of narcotics aboard commercial airlines before.
- Do not use modes of public transportation, such as "tap-taps" since there are safety and security issues. Reliable taxi service does not exist in Haiti, so arrange for transportation before your trip for the entire duration.
- Travelers should be extremely cautious everywhere in the country, and throughout their trip.. You should avoid night-time travel because of both bad road conditions and increased crime at night. Also, embassy employees have a curfew from 1 A.M. to 5 A.M., which travelers are encouraged to follow both to prevent danger and since embassy employees will not be able to assist travelers during these hours.
- Avoid large gatherings, since crowds can be rowdy and unpredictable. Assistance from Haitian authorities is lacking and often unavailable, so it is best to avoid these situations all together. Caution is especially advised on days when political activities or demonstrations are planned, since violent riots typically arise.
